I hope I am doing this right - I get confused on computers. My husband and I both grew up in Broad Ripple. He is 54 and I am 50 yrs old. We live in the house he grew up in, just south of Kessler and Kingsley. We've witnessed all the changes over the years - but we both have fond memories of our childhood spent in Broad Ripple. One of my very first memories is my mother taking me to the park to walk on the train engine. Do you remeber Little America? It was closer to Glendale but it was a real treat. And who can forget Hoosier Queen? The ice cream shop with a little door just for kids. Then of course, Murphy's Dime store, where we bought chick's at Easter - or the Hobby Shop on Carrollton - across from the Post Office, and next to StenzDale's (my first part time job). We can't forget Vonnegut's Hardware, or Fox Delicatessen. I just forgot the name of the drug store we always used - just north of the Post Office - but I can still remember the face of the lady who owned it. I remember my mother buying "Necco's" candy. I remember Block's dept. store - There I had my picture taken with Santa. Do you remeber Mr. Pancacke's? It was where Broad Ripple Trophy is now.
What a special treat it was to eat out for breakfast.
A little further east was Borky's, great cheeseburgers and curb service - my mother and her friends from grade
school had lunch there every Monday - they called themselves the Borky Babe's. To this day, they still get together for lunch on Monday afternoon's, and still refer to themselves as the Borky Babe's. My mother is 82 yrs. old. Right across the street was A&P
Grocery - I still remember the check out lanes as if it were yesterday. Then next door was Dan Young Chevrolet. I could go on...but I must get back to work. This was a fun trip on Memory Lane.
